How long does salmon keep, and how should you store it correctly? We’re asked this all the time. Here you’ll find everything you need to know about the shelf life and storage of our Swiss alpine salmon – from fresh salmon to smoked salmon and gravlax.
Fresh salmon is a natural product and tastes best when enjoyed as fresh as possible. In the fridge at 0–2 °C, our fresh salmon keeps for around 1–2 days after you receive it. To store it longer, freeze it right after delivery – it will then keep for up to 3 months.
Unopened and vacuum-sealed, our smoked salmon keeps until the best-before date printed on the pack, usually several weeks. Once opened, enjoy it ideally within 2–3 days. Smoked salmon also freezes well and keeps for around 2 months.
Similar guidance applies to our graved salmon: until the printed date while unopened, and within 2–3 days once opened. Always keep it chilled and tightly sealed.
Always keep salmon in the coldest part of the fridge and maintain an unbroken cold chain. For freezing, use the original packaging or an airtight freezer bag. Thaw frozen salmon slowly, ideally overnight in the fridge – never at room temperature.
Fresh salmon smells pleasantly mild, like the sea – never strong or of ammonia. The flesh is firm, glossy and evenly coloured. When in doubt, it’s better not to eat it.
Our Swiss alpine salmon is prepared only after you order, in Lostallo, and delivered to you fresh the same day. That way it reaches you in the best possible quality – sustainably raised in the pure mountain water of the Swiss Alps.
